How to submit your artwork or poetry to the exhibit

Art of Surviving Submission Form [PDF]

The Action Alliance is currently collecting art from sexual violence survivors interested in participating in the Art of Surviving exhibit. The Art of Surviving is meant to illustrate, through survivors’ own words or visual imagery, the scope, and impact of sexual violence, and the process of healing.

We are looking for pieces that hang on a wall (for example, we cannot accept free-standing sculptures because of limited storage and potential fragility of objects). Paintings, charcoals, drawings, poetry, collages, and any other media that can be framed are all eligible.

What kind of subject matter is appropriate?

It may be helpful to consider this question: as a survivor, what do you want the public to learn about sexual violence? Any artwork that relates to surviving sexual violence will be considered, including exploring how sexual violence affects victims, families, friends, communities, the process of healing, and what it means to move from victim to survivor. Visions of a world without sexual violence (and how we can achieve that) are also encouraged.

Who can submit artwork or poetry?

If you are survivor of sexual violence, are currently at least 18 years old and live in Virginia, you may submit work to be considered for this exhibit. If you are younger than 18 years of age, we are sorry that we will not able to consider your piece for this exhibit at this time.

How do I submit my work?

Complete an artist submission form, which includes contact information (this will be kept confidential, if requested) and an artist statement, and submit it with your work. We can help you figure out wording for your artist statement, and with filling out your submission forms, if you like. If you need help with either of these items, contact our office at (804) 377-0335 or toll-free (866) 387-3822.

Where do I submit my work?

Please send (or bring) your work to our Richmond office at 5008 Monument Avenue., Suite A, Richmond, VA 23230. If you want to drop off the work in person, please call our office first-- (804) 377-0335--to make sure someone will be there to meet you.

If you are unable to mail or deliver your work to our Richmond office, call Kate McCord at (804) 377-0335 or toll-free (866) 387-3822 to talk about the possibility of delivering your work to a sexual assault crisis center near you.

Can I submit my work anonymously?

We will keep your name confidential if you do not want your name or other identifying information included in the exhibit. We do ask that you submit contact information for our records so we can contact you, if needed. Your name will not appear on the exhibit unless you want it to appear.

Do I need to frame the work before I submit it?

If you want to have it framed yourself before you submit it, that’s fine. If not, we can have it framed. If you do not want it framed, please make a note on your submission form.

Do I need to pay a fee to submit my work?

There is no fee to participate in this exhibit. If you mail your work to us, we do ask that you pay for the postage to send it. Of course, we welcome any monetary contributions to support this project!

What is the deadline to submit?

We accept submissions at any time.

Are there any guidelines I should know about?

Any original artwork (including poetry or photographs) that can hang from a wall will be considered. We cannot accept pieces that are larger than 60” high x 42” wide framed. Given that this exhibit will be a permanent project of the Action Alliance, we ask that you be willing to either loan your work permanently to the Action Alliance, or to loan it for at least two years. It is likely that we will not be able to exhibit all artwork that is submitted to us; if we are not able to display your piece, we will return it to you.

How can I get more info?
