Basic Advocacy: Crisis InterventionTraining |
Description of Training:
Content includes: clarifying values and beliefs about crisis; defining the benefits of an empowerment model approach to crisis intervention; practicing active listening, effective communication and empathy techniques; identifying cultural influences on crisis and crisis response; assessing the emotional and physical safety needs of people who have experienced sexual and/or domestic violence; facilitating effective problem-solving; and understanding the importance, benefits and limitations of confidentiality. THERE IS A $10 FEE FOR THIS TRAINING.

Basic Advocacy: Child and Youth Advocacy Training

Description of Training:
Content includes: understand the ways in which children and youth are impacted by violence perpetrated against significant adults in their lives; identify the scope of physical and sexual violence perpetrated against children and youth; clarify personal and community values about children and youth; understand the importance of developmentally appropriate intervention with children and youth; practice skills associated with child/youth advocacy; explore unique issues of legal protections, confidentiality, empowerment and culturally appropriate services for children and youth; identify policy and procedure related to reporting suspected child abuse/neglect. THERE IS A $10 FEE FOR THIS TRAINING.
Intended audience: Limited to MEMBER SDVA staff and volunteers Staff and volunteers in the first 18 months of working in a Sexual and/or Domestic Violence Agency. Note: This training is designed for all advocates to provide the basic skills necessary when interacting with child victims, victims who are parents of minor children, and professionals in the community who are concerned about children and youth.

Basic Advocacy: Domestic Violence Advocacy Training

Description of Training:
Content includes: identifying the root causes of domestic violence; clarifying personal values and beliefs about health relationships and domestic violence; identifying risk factors for serious harm and tools for assessing risk; practicing the use of advocacy tools including safety planning, legal advocacy and advocacy for parents on behalf of their children; introduction to domestic violence laws in Virginia; and advocacy protocols and practices including safe recordkeeping, confidentiality, creating a multicultural environment and systems advocacy. THERE IS A $10 FEE FOR THIS TRAINING.

Basic Advocacy: Introduction to the Principles of Prevention Training

Description of Training:
This training is an introduction to the public health approach to the primary prevention of sexual violence and/or intimate partner violence that is used in many of Virginia’s SDVAs. THERE IS A $10 FEE FOR THIS TRAINING.

Retreat will be focusing on collaboration as one of the steps towards primary prevention. Our theme is “Collaboration Without Borders.” Collaboration includes bringing people of different disciplines and cultures to the table with a discussion that includes economics, poverty, racism and white privilege and how the intersection of all of these issues affects our advocacy and our clients.

One Voice: Gathering the Village to End DV & SA for ALL Children |
This conference will focus on the impact of sexual and domestic violence on children. Highlights of the conference include: effects of exposure to violence, safety planning, resiliency, and play therapy. Also, come learn about funding initiatives for prevention and intervention services for Virginia’s children.
Intended Audience: All professionals who work with children.

Sexual Violence Training for Trainers

This 3-day (April 2-4, 2008) INTENSIVE training is designed to build the skills of those who deliver training on the issues of sexual violence as part of their jobs. This training will prepare you to teach on the basic elements required for an effective community response to sexual violence.
Participants will:
- Explore the key elements of sexual violence training
- Identify and design for adult learning styles
- Design around different audience interests
- Learn how to balance workshop elements
- Learn how to assess the audience
- Learn how to use audio visuals effectively
Please note: this training addresses not only how to train, but also many of the issues associated with sexual violence. This is an intensive experience: 30 hours of training over three days. It is our intention that participants feel safe and supported while striving to become more effective trainers about the many difficult issues concerning sexual violence.
This training is limited to 30 participants. All participants must commit to attend the training in its entirety. This training involves an application process. Intended Audience: Anyone who would like to become an effective trainer on the issues of sexual violence. Past training participants have included law enforcement, social service, college and university personnel, mental health, health care professionals as well as advocates working in Sexual and Domestic Violence Programs.
